the law life journey

today seth and i have been married for eight months. eight whole months. geez. strange how although it seems hard to remember a time before i was married, i still feel as though my wedding was like… yesterday.

alas, the eight months have passed and seth has nearly finished his final year of undergraduate work. *yay*

which leads me to why i chose to create this blog. life will be changing, yet again, very soon. and while i am not the biggest fan of the “married” blogs all mormon women seem to start as soon as they are wed – I feel an obligation to better document the next three years of our life. i imagine it will be quite the adventure. perhaps a new state (seriously, can I be done moving already?) even a new job (… or i could take the advice of others and just have a baby...brilliant idea… eye roll) combine that with the envy i feel for of my husband’s pending legal education, but relief that it will be him, and not me, studying for law school finals… i think we have some fun stuff in store.

so to begin the blog of all blogs – the application process for law school is FINISHED.

with great combined effort (hey, we are “one” now, right?) we applied to a bunch of law schools, kind of all over the country, and we are excited to see which school will be the great benefactor of the Bank of Rogers. here is the great list of potential money-suckers:

Arizona State University – Phoenix, Arizona
University of Arizona – Tucson, Arizona
Brigham Young University – Provo, Utah
Georgetown University – Washington, D.C.
Gonzaga University – Spokane, Washington
University of Hawai’i – Honolulu, Hawai’i
Louisiana State University – Lafayette, Louisiana
University of Oregon – Eugene, Oregon
Pepperdine University – Malibu, California
Santa Clara University – Santa Clara, California
Willamette University – Salem, Oregon

until we get accepted, we are keeping all our options open (although, if i do say so myself – our applications rocked – so we’ll get in), but we still have our favorites.

we have waffled among our top choices, including Arizona State, Brigham Young, and Santa Clara.

Arizona State was a top choice for obvious weather reasons. plus, proximity to the I-L’s and DISNEYLAND provide for an added bonus. ability and desire to buy a house in the area seems to seal the deal.

however… there are bonuses to others.

Brigham Young University has clear pros and cons. pros: janae has a job in the Utah. loves said job and finding another one makes her wish for death. even bigger pro however is the fact that BYU costs like pennies to the benjamins of every one else. and janae likes pennies. the cons, however, include snow, cold, misery, drivers, and allergies. and lack of proximity to… well… basically anything.

Santa Clara made an ironic appearance as our top choice. the majority of the schools on our list had entrance averages on par with seth’s stats. we wanted to look for some great schools that if our top choice wasn’t an option, we wouldn’t mind calling home. i didn’t want to feel like we had to settle. anyway – i – strike that – WE – started to apply to some schools where seth’s scores exceeded their typical scores. *we* started browsing schools located in areas we wouldn’t hate to reside in and i came across Santa Clara. for those of you who know my husband, you will know that about 50% of his happiness-slash-good-mood rests in the palms of a phoenix-based set of athletes, the SUNS. particularly Steve Nash. now, janae only knows this because she loves seth, who loves the suns, but Santa Clara is the alma mater from Steve Nash’s college days, and what better fall back school could we pick? so *we* filled out the application. after being less than enthused with the whole process, *someone* discovered a few weeks later that Santa Clara is actually one of the best law schools in the country for the particular type of law he wants to practice. its proximity to the silicon valley makes it a premier recruiting ground for high tech intellectual property law. it’s cost is pretty high, but hopefully the cost can be mitigated by seth’s impeccable grades and charming smile J (and the fact that i wont claim him on my taxes.)

the rest have pros and cons – like who wouldn’t want to live in hawai’i? i know momma & pops would love a migration to oregon. but I guess we will see where the wind blows – and if you’d like to submit your argument for one of the aforementioned schools… feel free to try to win us over :)

looking forward to seth starting his new law life and being his new law wife! (i'll try to post often!)

xx
